Carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy diet.
Which is why in this article, we’ll explain what carbs are and why they’re so important for your health.
You need carbohydrates for energy
Plain and simple, carbohydrates (more specifically glucose) are the body’s preferred source of energy.
Glucose, one of three monosaccharides (galactose, glucose and lactose) that come from carbohydrates like grains and sugars, converts to energy for your body through a process called glycolysis.
Any glucose not immediately used gets stored in your muscles and liver as glycogen for later use.
Carbs are needed for brain function
Carbs are the main source of energy for your brain as well.
You see brain cells need glucose to function, so if you aren’t eating enough carbs, your brain will begin using a less efficient, alternative fuel: ketones.
Produced when you burn fat for energy in a process called ketosis, ketones can be used by the brain but not very efficiently.
This explains why a low-carb diet may not give you enough energy in some cases.
And also why people who cut out carbs completely often feel sluggish or unfocused.
Carbs provide fiber for a healthy GI tract
Carbohydrates and fiber are important for the health of your digestive tract.
Fiber can help you maintain normal bowel movements improving nutrient absorption and preventing constipation.
Fiber also helps you feel full faster, which is especially beneficial if you are trying to lose weight.
The American Heart Association recommends that men consume 38 grams of fiber each day and women consume 25 grams daily.
A diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables will help ensure adequate intake of dietary fiber (about 20-35 g/day).
