High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a popular fitness trend that’s been around for decades.
What used to be referred to as Fartlek training (a Swedish term meaning speed play), HIIT is exactly what it sounds like:
alternating bursts of higher-intensity exercise with regular intervals of lower-intensity exercise
The idea behind HIIT workouts is that they’re more time efficient than moderate-intensity workouts.
The result being burning more calories (and fat!) in less time by doing shorter bursts at higher intensities.
Even better?
You won’t get bored!
Here are our 5 favorite benefits of HIIT Training
5 Benefits of HIIT training
1. Minimal equipment necessary (if any)
Here at HIIT HART all you’ll need are just two kettlebells for resistance training and a jump rope to get started.
(We recommend 35 pound kettlebells for men and 25 pound kettlebells for women)
However, we’ve seen many HIIT workouts can be done with no equipment at all.
In fact, many of our WOD’s (Workout Of the Day) incorporate calisthenic movements such as burpees and mountain climbers.
2. Less time exercising
Some HIIT workouts can be done in as little as 10 minutes a day.
Making this type of exercise great for people who don’t have a lot of time to work out but still want to get a good workout.
HIIT training also helps increase your metabolism so that you burn more calories throughout the day!
3. Burn more fat, especially during and after exercise
HIIT can help you burn more calories than steady state cardio.
Unlike conventional steady state cardio, HIIT involves higher intensity bursts of activity followed by lower intensity recovery periods.
And this creates a large Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) response resulting in greater fat loss over time.
How so you might ask.
Well in addition to you burning more calories during the workout itself; you’ll continue burning calories long after you’ve finished exercising.
Sometimes even up to 24 hours after your workout.
4. HIIT boost athletic performance
HIIT can improve your athletic performance in a number of ways.
First, it improves your ability to recover from workouts.
Now this is important because if your body isn’t able to recover quickly enough, you won’t be able train hard enough for optimal athletic performance.
Second, HIIT can help you build muscle and increase strength faster than traditional weight training methods by increasing the release of testosterone into the bloodstream.
5. Preserves muscle mass and metabolism
Another great benefit is that HIIT can help preserve your muscle mass and metabolism when you’re in a caloric deficit.
So if your goal is to lose weight, know that your body will continue to burn fat for energy instead of say muscle tissue.
In short, HIIT is a great way to get in shape if you don’t have a lot of time to devote to working out.
